The state of Hiamachal Pradesh in the Northwest of India, and in particular Dharmsala, is home to displaced families from the poorest areas of India. They live in slums of up to 600 people, struggling to survive with begging and waste collection. Being out-of-state citizens they have no rights and no government support.

Fontana Foundation’s relationship with Tong-Len goes back many years. The first project we supported was the building of a hostel for children of the slums of Daramsala. 

The current project we are working on with Jamyang, the founder of Tong-Len, is the establishment of a vocational training program for young adults who have completed Tong-Len School (Grade 10), or youths living in the slums and the village of Daramsala.

Fontana Foundation is supporting the initiative by providing the necessary funds to hire a suitable teacher, buy teaching material and equipment and rent an appropriate location.

The training of a first class of electricians with 15 participants has started. It will last 6 months. The curriculum and facilities have been inspected and approved by NSDC (National Skill Development Corporation of India). Students will complete the training with a test at NSDC.

After the successful completion of the program, participants will be coached and supported in their job search for up to 12 months, until they have successfully established themselves in their new life.
