The Mount Sunzu Coffee Estate is an agricultural project in Zambia where high-quality Arabica coffee is being produced. Of the 780-hectare property in Northern Zambia 200 hectares are used for coffee production. The remaining 580 hectares are left in their original state as Miombo forests and Dambo wetlands.

Mount Sunzu’s vision is to produce climate-positive coffee. The company understands the role and importance of local impact. Therefore, the founders do not simply coexist with their surroundings; they are actively involved in the community and work with them to improve the lives of the local population. As per now, 150 new long-term and high-quality jobs have been created.

The founders believe that only holistic concepts are the way forward. Accordingly, the farm is being developed based on conservation agriculture, green energy with the goal of reducing poverty and protect the environment

This is being achieved by

  • climate-smart agroecological practices (i.e. reduced greenhouse gas emissions, soil conservation, cover crops, water-use efficiency, biological pest control agents, solar power),
  • initiating projects for income diversification (i.e. honey production), and
  • environmental protection (protect the surrounding miombo forest).

Fontana Foundation has been partnering with Mount Sunzu Coffee Farm since 2021. Representatives have visited the farm in 2022 and are happy with its progress. We are convinced the project will create a meaningful long-term impact.
