Wheelchairs for Ethiopia

During a trip to Ethiopia we visited a workshop in Addis Abeba, where used wheelchairs from Switzerland are being fitted and repaired for handicapped persons in Ethiopia. The workshop was started by the Signum Vitae society with the technical support of Bernhard Wissler who is currently in Addis to set up a new workshop and train employees.

It is the goal of this project to bring used wheelchairs from Europe to Ethiopia and get them fitted for handicapped persons there. In 2011 two containers containing a total of 230 wheelchairs were sent to Addis Abeba, with the goal to ship three containers annually. Costs for transportation of these containers are budgeted at CHF 30’000, building the workshop will also cost CHF 30’000, the running costs for the shop will amount to CHF 40’000 per annum.

The Fontana Foundation supported the project in 2011 and is planning on investing in this venture in the coming years, thus providing as many handicapped persons as possible with a wheelchair. If possible, parts of the costs of running the workshop will be covered with income from its services.
